The 12th chapter out of the book Zechariah relates to the end of this wicked world system. As prophesied in the bible, animosity and hostility toward the Jewish people will escalate to an all time high to the extent her enemies will all gather against her. They’ll try to bring utter destruction on her; however, her enemies are the ones who will bring destruction on themselves because it’s God Himself who will battle on her behalf against them. It will also be a time in which all the nations around the world will know that it’s God Almighty Himself leading the fight on behalf of His chosen people.

Above all, it’s a time where Israel will finally acknowledge and accept Christ as their Messiah they had long rejected. (Zechariah 12:10) gives a clear insight regarding their desperation in embracing Christ by saying that they will look on Him whom they’ve pierced, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son. 

The Jewish people accepting Christ as their Messiah showcases the reason why He is an absolutely necessity to every person. While many may be blinded by deceptions, false systems, lies, pride, and arrogance to the degree they falsely believe that they do not need Christ, but there’ll certainly come a day they’ll desperately need Him. You cannot reject someone that your whole hope and future are based on Him and get away with it. Thus it’s a matter of when that critical realization will become obvious to them due to the fact that Jesus can only be accepted as Savior and Lord on this side of this life.

During the Lord intervention into the conflict, here’s what the clans of Judah will say in their hearts:

The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God (Zechariah 12:5).

All throughout the history of the Jewish people, their strength and ability to fight against their enemies were connected directly to their obedience to God by honoring His covenant with them. The message about that verse is quite clear, if the Lord is strong, so His own people. Since God doesn’t reward rebellion and idolatry; thereby, there was a precondition that would determine His presence being with them in battles.

What does that mean to us as Christ’s followers? If we were to paraphrase this Scripture verse above, it would be like this: the children of God are strong because Christ is their Lord and Savior. The truth is that we are strong as a result of our faith in God through Christ. If we can embrace that as the core foundation of the Christian life, then it would be very unwise for us to live the Christian life within our own human ability, effort, and will. It would also be foolish for us not rely on God when we’re overwhelmed by life’s storms, along with when people have turned against us.

Even if we were able to deal with an issue, life’s problems are coming at us at a constant pace, we would be driven completely at some point. Our human strength would also be depleted as a result. Therefore, let’s depend on the One our strength comes from Him, and the One who is all-capable of fighting for us by trusting Him alone.

In short, depending on God is to allow Him to guide and strengthen us by His mighty hand to face whatever problem that comes up in our daily lives. And trusting Him above all is also telling Him go ahead of us and lead the fight for us since we’re incapable of doing so. How can He not be pleased by such and incredible faith based on humility and acknowledgement of His absolute power over the issues we’re wrestling against?
